Effective design must be strategic—both problem and goal oriented and conceptual. In order to identify and analyze a problem, design knowledge as well as scientific and economic knowledge is also necessary. Those who intend to occupy managerial positions in the design field or who wish to pursue freelance occupations must master both strategy and practicality. Design can be interpreted here as shaping social progress which along with financial success and can also improve the human condition. Thus, in Strategic Design, the emphasis is future to incorporate social development and its challenges. In order to accomplish this, both cultural and sociological knowledge is necessary and the program here at the HFG imparts such expertise.

Interaction design is primarily concerned with the development of operational sequences. As an interaction designer you will be optimizing existing service offerings, devices, and products such as the menus, legibility, and visualization of screen interfaces. You will develop new software and interactive exhibits for museums and trade fairs, websites, navigation devices, digital working or living environments, or computer games. Interaction design is linked to communication and product design yet also to related disciplines such as psychology and mechatronics. To tackle these areas professionally the course offers newly developed lectures, seminars, and projects. Over seven semesters design, typography, visualization and animation methods, history of design and media, programming languages, theories of communication and design, and usability are taught and practised. During the major studies you will integrate the component areas into complex projects.

Graphic designers are specialists in the wide field of visual communication. As independent designers or as art directors in advertising agencies, publishers, design studios, business enterprises, science and culture, they design projects in the disciplines of graphic design, corporate design, editorial design (publishing), trade fair design, packaging design, web design, photography and animated film.
